Journey of the Self - Chapter 5

Welcome to our self-care program which has been designed to support you in establishing and maintaining a positive approach to self- care that fits with your unique life circumstances, strength, challenges and needs. I trust that step 4 helped you to discover things about yourself, that perhaps you forgot or just ignored, because you thought it was not important but it must have been a fun experience as well.

STEP 5

Part 1

In this step we will be focusing on our health

I trust you are still following the steps if not please renew intentions as We can only benefit from it inshaAllah

"Health is the greatest of all possessions. Youth and Health are not appreciated until lost" (Hadrat Ali R. A)

Our bodies are amazing no matter what their size, shape, colour, physical ability or quirkiness. They are a powerful part of us that allows us to do and achieve things every day.

As well as the physical things, our bodies also have an unbelievable emotional radar system

Knowing your body's unique reactions to stress or upset can help you figure out how to respond to these feelings in the future

For example you may need to take some deep breaths, have some water, call a friend for support or get some rest. So listen to your body!

I want you to choose a page in your journal /notebook to describe why your body is so wonderful, how it gives you important signals about your emotions and why you love it for e.g the legs help you to run or walk ,the lips help you to speak and you experience different emotions like joy, fear, anger, love and surprise.

You may make use of pictures or drawings as well, have fun with it!

Part 2

Being aware of the physical sensations of the body and the physical sensations of food is called mindfully eating.

Savouring food-taking in the flavours, textures and aromas in all of the senses means you are aware of when food is enjoyable or not and when you have had enough to eat. We often associate good memories with eating so when we feel down it can be tempting to turn to food to make us feel better

However instead of doing this we can find other ways to help us deal with our emotions, the best way to start is by getting to know ourselves better and learning to love who we are (exercise done in Part 1)

Experiencing our food for the nourishment it offers and allowing ourselves to simply feel emotions will allow us to deal with the feeling we have more confidently. I will be posting some mindful eating meditations for you to practice daily or once or twice a week, it’s entirely up to you. Good luck !

Shukran/Thank you
